My name is Georgi Kartalov and I live in Veliko Tarnovo, a city located in the central part of Bulgaria.
My first attempt in mapmaking was in 1987 at the age of 17, when I was training orienteering in my home town Velingrad – host of several world ski orienteering championships.
In the course of the years, besides my pursuit in high performance sport, I practiced mapmaking as a hobby.
As a professional athlete I participated in 5 world championships – 2 in ski orienteering (Italy 1994 and Norway 1996) and 3 in foot orienteering (USA 1993, Switzerland 1994 and Russia 1996 – military competition).
I have graduated the National Sports Academy with a major in Orienteering and have a 10-year experience as a coach.
After my active athletic career came to an end, I took up coaching and orienteering mapmaking.
Since 2010 my main occupation is a cartographer and since then I have made dozens of maps for our national competitions, as well as for events of European and world level.
